The disciples didn’t understand because Jesus was purposely keeping them from it. They were not ready to receive full knowledge, which is why Jesus continued to lead them around Israel experiencing different circumstances so that when the time came they would then completely understand. Yes, the average person understood even less though they craved to know, much like us today.
